Make the Choice to Step up and Help Close the Literacy Gap!

Although we are just thinking about coming to the end of one school year, N.D. Reading Corps is already recruiting and planning for the 2017-18 school year! We’re currently in search of tutors to serve Kindergarten through 3rd grade students who are falling just below proficiency, but do not qualify for any extra services. We don’t want any child to go underserved, so we are working to CLOSE the Literacy Gap and help all students become proficient readers by the end of third grade!

Through AmeriCorps, often referred to as the domestic version of the Peace Corps, literacy tutors commit to 10 months of service (August-May) to help students become proficient readers. In exchange for their service, tutors receive a monthly living stipend and education award upon completion of service. Tutors work with students one-on-one in 20-minutes sessions delivering proven interventions that help struggling learners transform into confident students – something that translates into all areas of their lives.

Learning to read by 3rd grade is a critical benchmark that marks the shift from students learning to read to students reading to learn. Students who do not read proficiently by 3rd grade are four times more likely than proficient readers to drop out of high school. Non-graduates are two times more likely to live in poverty. This is an opportunity for you to step up and help change these statistics! “A teacher whose student I was tutoring pulled me aside the other day and shared with me that the student expressed to her how well he thought he was doing with reading. He exclaimed, “I think all that reading practice I’ve been doing with Miss Bachmeier has made me better at reading and everything else. In the 2015-16 school year N.D. Reading Corps tutors dedicated 28,000 hours to 774 K-3 students towards closing the literacy gap. 83% of K-3 students demonstrated improved academic performance in reading, putting them on track to proficiency (498 of 589 students completing service or had enough “dose” to see results). Tutors currently serve in the following school districts: Bismarck, Hazen, Fargo, Jamestown, Mandan, Minot, Northern Cass and West Fargo.

Our tutors come at different points in their life: college students, stay-at-home parents, retirees, etc. It is a great fit for anyone that may want to connect to their local school and community and be involved in education and making a BIG IMPACT on a child’s future.

I feel like I made an impact on their lives, not only in their reading skills, but also by being a trusted adult in their lives,” Stephanie Christeson, two-year tutor at Clara Barton Hawthorne Elementary in Fargo who was an active volunteer in the community and her children’s schools when she decided to become a N.D. Reading Corps tutor.

Bradley Rieth went into the workforce following high school graduation and was not certain what direction he wanted to take with his life. He decided to serve a year with N.D. Reading Corps as he was ready to pursue a college degree and take the next step in his career but wanted to be sure that elementary education was the right path for him. Serving with N.D. Reading Corps confirmed that working with students is his true passion. He enrolled at NDSU the following fall semester to pursue a degree in elementary education.


Reading Corps is a breakthrough AmeriCorps program that is changing academic outcomes for thousands of students. With more than 1,900 tutors serving in 12 states and Washington D.C., Reading Corps is helping more than 40,000 students each year become successful readers.
